Perusing people's bookshelves

Once upon a time, one’s bookshelf was like a window to the soul. The books we chose to read and keep close said more about us than could be gleaned by a mere conversation. I’m not sure if that still holds true in the way it used to but I’ll never tire of perusing people’s books. And I still think they say a lot about a person.

Derek Jarman’s Books and Journals

While photographing Derek Jarman’s Prospect Cottage for Still Lives, his friend and heir Keith Collins told me I was welcome to look at any of the books I liked – even the many volumes of Jarman’s personal journals. Of course I took him up on that.

Two copies of The Anatomy of Madness…hmmmm.
I loved this little area with his books on color.
Copious notes and more in his copy of the Tempest.
I believe that is his Mum.
A poem penned in his youth.
And then there was this beautiful journal that was just page after page of men and their contact info.
The prettiest “little black book” I have ever seen.
Bedside reading.
