Places I go, things I see

Musée Bourdelle
Paris, France

While scouting artists’ homes for Still Lives, I visited what felt like every artist’s house museum in Paris and to my surprise, none felt right. None except this room at Musée Bourdelle. Formerly the home and atelier of sculptor Emile-Antoine Bourdelle, this room, his atelier, had a palpable other-worldliness to it. Even as visitors milled in and out of the space, I had the sense that Bourdelle was just in the next room, taking a break before getting back to work here. The essence of Bourdelle still lives within these walls.

Stephen De Staebler and Danae Mattes’ Studio
Berkeley, California

On the recommendation of a friend, I visited the studio of sculptor Stephen De Staebler and his wife, artist Danae Mattes years ago. De Staebler passed away in 2011, but beyond building his own home, the studio he created behind his home where Mattes still works was still left untouched in places.
